FIRST PERSON: Excerpt from Labyrinthine Shoals

THIRD PERSON: (from original app) I had thought myself dead more times than I had thought myself truly alive, but I had always seemed to survive. This time, it did not seem likely, with the heavy weight of my massive jailer friend dragging me down the dark cliff, away from salvation, and into the sea below. It was not so simple. It never is.

Somehow, I had survived the fall, and the shock of the frigid water which cushioned my impact and dragged me away from the oppressive jagged rocks at the base of the island prison, out to the sea. The sailors had said the currents that ran about the island were tricky, and now I knew their words for truth. I was dragged under, and though I was soul-weary, I was not weary enough for the fire in my heart to succumb to the deluge of the waves. I fought, clawing for the surface of the water, and broke free to the night sky, to draw ragged breaths before the waters pulled me down again.

Twice, I drew breath, tasting salt...and then no more. I felt my rough garb twisting about my bruised body as I flailed in the darkness of the waters, seeking freedom and not finding it. I prayed to the name of every god and angel that I knew dear. Lord in the heavens, I asked, take me not now! Blessed Elua, I begged, if you can hear me in the Terre D'Ange that lies beyond, please have mercy! Yeshua, I pleaded, speak to your father on my behalf and spare me! Asherat-of-the-Sea, I prayed, do not take me now. If I am dead, how am I to unveil the blasphemy in your temple! Kushiel, I thought desperately, why mark me with your dart if you would let me die here, with my queen so close to such treachery!

Ysandre, my queen. I had failed her. I would die, and so would she. Melisande's hand had slain us both already, and would bear no bloodstains for it. I wept into the sea, salt mingling with salt, and let go the breath that I could no longer hold, reflex taking me over. My thoughts turned to Hyacinthe. He, too, I had failed. I had promised to find a way to free him from his apprenticeship that was little more than imprisonment. The Prince of Travelers consigned to a single rock for the rest of his earthly existence. I prayed that he would find a way to free himself, for he was my best and oldest friend, even before Delaunay. Oh, Delaunay...Him, I had failed as well, and sweet Alcuin. They both died for the slip of my tongue, and I bearing a petulant grudge against their happiness with each other. I had loved them both.

But neither so much as I loved Joscelin. He, most of all, I had failed. I had been glad for our fight, for he had not gone with me to the Little Court and died like my chevaliers. If I had had my sword at my side, I am sure that Melisande would have broken him, to break me...For that, I had thanked all the gods that would hear me. But he had come to rescue me...He had seen me fall, and I had seen his torch picking its way down the craggy side of that dreaded island. Please, I entreated all the deities I could think of, all at the once: please keep my Joscelin safe. Let him live through this, and let him loose the leash of pursuit. Let him find the happiness that I could not give him.

I ceased flailing in the icy depths, no longer knowing which direction was up, and the pain seared through my lungs like a thousand molten daggers as my body tried to breathe and found only seawater where it wished for air. The pain brought the response that it always did from my body, but also a terror such that I had never known tempered with the strange calm of the acceptance of my finality. And then, I heard the beating of bronze wings in my ears as the blackness of my sight gave way to something blacker.
